Glazes should be wet sieved through either 80s or 100s mesh sieve. The quantity of water added varies according to many variable factors including the glaze ingredients, the porosity of the bisque fired clay, the time taken to dip the ware, whether spraying or double dipping and the firing temperature. A rule of thumb is that 1kg dry powder glaze makes up approximately 1.25 litres dipping glaze. Glaze may be “set up” using approximately one tablespoon of Calcium Chloride or Glaze Set up Solution per 5 litres. This is useful with glazes that tend to settle out, but should not be used in glazes containing bone ash.
